we are a love worth fighting for |
|
|
In week 2 of PRIDE (missed week 1?), we lift up the voices of 4 more queer Black women whose courage has literally shaped our lives. To be clear, none of these women were perfect. I say that because we don’t need to deify them, but see their lives as living proof that we and our collective liberation are possible.
They loved us fiercely and believe(d) we are a love worth fighting for. |

A is for Audre Lorde
“When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”
Our Sister Ancestor Audre Lorde In her words: “Black, Lesbian, Feminist, Socialist, Mother, Warrior, Poet” 1934-1992 |
|
an exercise: reflect & free write |
| Self Study: When was the last time I was so convicted about my vision it didn’t matter if I was afraid? What was special about that time? What made that courage possible? |

P is for Pauli Murray
Our dearest Ancestor Pauli Murray is responsible for the desegregation of public schools in the United States. You read that right. And that’s just ONE of the things Pauli did. As the only Black woman law student in her class at Howard Law, Pauli went from being ignored to coming up with the legal argument that would later win Brown vs Board of Education. Do you hear me? Pauli KNEW.
“In not a single one of these little campaigns was I victorious. In other words, in each case, I personally failed, but I have lived to see the thesis upon which I was operating vindicated. And what I very often say is that I’ve lived to see my lost causes found.”
Our Sister Ancestor Pauli Murray Activist, Scholar, Legal Theorist, Author and more! 1910-1985 |
|
an exercise: reflect & free write |
| What good do I know that I know — through effort, study and intuition — that may not be listened to by those around me? How can I still put this knowing forward so my lost causes may be found? |

B is for Barbara Smith
“We are certainly damaged people. The question is, finally, do we use that damage, that first-hand knowledge of oppression, to recognize each other, to do what work we can together? Or do we use it to destroy?” Our Sister Ancestor Barbara Smith Black Feminist Pioneer, Lesbian, Activist, Author and more! 1946 |
|
an exercise: reflect & free write
Fill In The Blank: Today, by doing _________________________________________, I claim my damage not as a tool to destroy but a tool for connection and good. |

J is for June Jordan
“I am a feminist, and what that means to me is much the same as the meaning of the fact that I am Black; it means that I must undertake to love myself and to respect myself as though my life depends upon self-love and self-respect.”
Our Sister Ancestor June Jordan Poet, Essayist, Teacher, Activist and more! 1936-2002 |
|
an exercise: reflect & free write |
| If my life depended on it today, what is one act of self-love and respect I could do before the day’s end? |
