"This, my dear, is a prayer for stillness... Whatever kind of stillness your sweet heart desires."

Written by Dear Black Woman Brandi Keeler

Hey lovely,

Brandi

How are things going? I noticed you’ve been more tired than usual lately. Have you been taking enough time for yourself to rest. Like really rest? (Which, for clarification, is not the same staring tiredly at Netflix in the name of “me time”  when you’d rather be sleeping.) I hope you know how precious you are and how sometimes precious people need rest.

I’ve noticed you’ve been making a lot happen! You’re back on track with diet and exercise. Back on track with meditation. Back on track with completing projects. Back on track with your side hustles. Back on track with staying balanced with all your commitments. You’re doing amazing for this period in your life and I want you to know that your efforts haven’t gone unnoticed…or unappreciated. You are literally GIVING ME LIFE with all that you’ve been doing for yourself and the world. And still, amongst all these awesome things, I hope you find some time to just sit and NOT do.

This, my dear, is a prayer for stillness. And not some serious, monk-like stillness with the goal of mindfulness. It can be silly stillness. Pointless stillness. Fidgety stillness. Whatever kind of stillness your sweet heart desires.

I pray for you, at least 15 minutes a day, separate from meditation, when you have nothing to do, nowhere to go, no one to respond to and nothing to be. Just time to exist for the sake of existing. You know that yummy feeling on Saturday mornings when you awaken and don’t have to move from your waking spot because there’s literally nowhere to go and no one to respond to, so you move at your own pace? You know that feeling? I pray you have a moment of that daily. Even on your busiest Monday, I pray that you get to savor your own time. I pray that you have time to waft, responsibility-free, through your own imagination. Time to daydream. Time to pick at your toenails or a scab (lol). Time to stare out the window or stare into nothingness. Time to wonder about the future or chuckle at past memories. Time where you don’t know where your phone is and don’t care. Time when you temporarily forget that you have a to do list (no matter how long it is). This, my dear, is a prayer for stillness. And not some serious, monk-like stillness with the goal of mindfulness. It can be silly stillness. Pointless stillness. Fidgety stillness. Whatever kind of stillness your sweet heart desires. I know there are some changes coming later this year that will make it so that this precious time will be even more difficult to come by so I pray that you savor what time you can, while you can. You are worth your own time, even if it’s “unproductive.” Not every second of your day has to be spent on accomplishing things and good habits. Staring and daydreaming have their purposes in a fulfilling life too. I pray this for you and commit to working alongside the creator to manifest this gift for you. Or not working…which is the whole point. 😋

I love you. Be still my love. You deserve it.

Love,

Your best self
